Frequently asked questions
Does HIPAA have anything to do with website accessibility?
They're separate obligations — HIPAA covers privacy, while the ADA/504/1557 cover accessibility. But they converge on patient portals: a portal must be both secure and accessible. Auditing the public site plus the portal entry flow covers the highest-risk surface.
Our patient portal is from a major vendor. Are we liable for its accessibility?
Patients experience it as your service, and enforcement actions name the provider organization. Scan what you can, obtain VPAT/ACR documentation from the vendor, put accessibility in the contract, and document that you monitor it.
